ACUPUNCTURE FOR DOGS AND CATS IN NORRIDGE, IL: PROMOTING HEALING AND RELAXATION

cat stretching

While its use in Chinese medicine has spanned the centuries, pet acupuncture in Norridge, IL is a relatively new therapy to Western medicine. Similar to its effect on us, acupuncture puts dogs and cats at ease and stimulates the body’s natural painkillers. Our Dr. Anderson has a special interest in Chinese medicine and obtained her acupuncture certification in 2009. Since then, she’s been offering this relaxing therapy to the pets of Norridge.

Cat and dog acupuncture uses fine needles inserted into points where nerves and blood vessels come together. While it may sound painful, rest assured, your companion hardly feels a thing. Most pets tolerate the procedure very well and some even manage to fall asleep!

DOG ACUPUNCTURE: WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT TREATS

Acupuncture for dogs grew out of Chinese medicinal treatments that were meant to balance the energy of the body when it was afflicted with a disease. In more Western terms, acupuncture stimulates a number of reactions such as:

  • Increases blood circulation
  • Release of hormones
  • Stimulates nerves
  • Relieves muscle spasms

Acupuncture for dogs can be used to help treat a number of medical issues. Coupled with traditional medicine, it can help your pet have a better quality of life. It is also an ideal pain reliever for pets who cannot take traditional pain medications. Pet acupuncture helps with a variety of conditions including:

  • Arthritis
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Degenerative joint diseases
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Seizure disorders
  • Respiratory problems
  • Dermatological issues
  • And more!

LENGTH OF TREATMENT

Depending on your pet’s condition, they could benefit from a few vet acupuncture sessions short-term, or a number of sessions long-term. The typical session lasts from 10 minutes to half an hour and occurs once or twice a week. Generally, chronic conditions such as arthritis will require a longer treatment plan and regular sessions, while less acute conditions will benefit from only a few sessions.
