Dr. Aaron Caplan

What is your educational and work background?

I received my undergraduate degree in animal sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. I then went on to receive my DVM from the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Throughout my education, I worked as a veterinary assistant, technician, and receptionist.

What made you decide to become a vet?

I am one of those people that wanted to be a veterinarian from a very young age. While other kids were watching cartoon network, I was glued to the screen watching Animal Planet.

Why did you decide to join the Companion team?

The workplace culture and family atmosphere. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with every day.

What is the best thing about being a vet?

Building relationships with people and their beloved pets. I love the opportunity to be able to advocate for animals and ensure pets live long and happy lives with their families.

What is one of the most common problems you’ve encountered in pets you treat?

Dental disease! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of a cure when it comes to the oral health of our furry friends.

Do you have any special interests in vet medicine?

Surgery and ophthalmology

What is the most unusual pet you have helped treat?

A golden eagle with a broken wing at the California Wildlife Center.

What are some of your favorite activities outside of work?

I am an avid fisherman and love to lift weights. Without those two things I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

Saba Italian Bar + Kitchen

Italy

Favorite food?

Pizza, hands down.

Favorite movie?

Inception

Name 3 things people might be surprised to learn about you:

  1. I bought my first boat at age 14 with money I made mowing lawns.
  2. I am a huge fan of the UFC and mixed martial arts.
  3. I spent 3 months couch surfing across Europe before veterinary school.
